For the first time, Workforce Development and Youth One Stop collaborated together on bringing in a military professional to conduct a workshop. Workforce partnered with Angel Orsini from the Army National Guard for this special project. Angel brings with him over 30 years of experience recruiting for the Army National Guard. The focus is to provide youth and young adults with awareness about what the military provides and how they can benefit from their services. The participants were able to obtain two perspectives when it came to comparing civilian real life struggles – i.e. higher education, finances, and career pathway – as compared to military life.
Participants were given the opportunity to reflect upon this experience. Reflection is critical when it comes to the human condition and real world experiences. We need time to process what is going on and the potential outcomes. Abigail states “I like that there are many options; such as going to college to pursue a career that you’re interested in. I feel like a lot of people don’t have a career path in mind. This is a great opportunity to explore ideas.” Shemar states “Staff Sergeant Orsini was very informative and I’m glad he gave us the opportunity to learn more about the military.”
We all have heard about the services of what the military can bring, but asking a recruiter upfront brings in a whole new experience. Workforce Development would like to expand the Civilian- Military dynamics going forward. The goal is to invite other branches of service and expose the youth and young adults to more diverse opportunities. We would also like to incorporate working with Veterans, and work on special projects such as assisting those impacted by the Russian/Ukraine War.
