The Workforce Development Center is excited to announce the return of its Next Gen Summer Academy (NGSA) for a third year! This 3-week program is offered to all youth residing in Dutchess County ages 16 – 21 who have an interest in technology. Through this program, participants gain key skills in coding, computer-aided design, 3D printing, and more. Participants are also given the opportunity to connect with local professionals and tour businesses throughout the program.
In the previous year, 20 youth from NGSA successfully graduated with a certification in coding and robotics. This year, NGSA aims to integrate coding and robotics with virtual and augmented reality, exploring more creative ways to engage today's youth. Thanks to the support of the Dutchess County Workforce Investment Board (WIB), we are fortunate to have VR headsets to enhance the learning experience this year.
Though technology skills building is the key focus of our NGSA program, leadership development also has an important role to play in the participant experience within each of our Workforce programs. During the final week of NGSA, youth will be challenged with a capstone project to develop a product that solves a current problem within their local communities, utilizing their new gained skills.
The program will run from August 7th to August 25th, from Monday to Friday, 9 am – 1 pm. Breakfast and lunch is provided to participants throughout programming days. Orientation will be held at the Chamber offices, at 1 Civic Center Plaza, Suite 407 on Thursday, July 20th, 2023, from 5 pm – 6 pm to provide further information about the program. Youth between the ages of 16-21 are encouraged to apply for NGSA by completing an application form before July 14th. Applications for NGSA can be found on the Chamber’s website at dcrcoc.org.
We are grateful for the support of the Dyson Foundation, New York State Office of Children and Family Services, and Dutchess County Division Youth Services, who have contributed to funding this program and making it possible. For more information or any inquiries, please feel free to reach out to the Director of Workforce Development, Marilyn Figueroa at mfigueroa@dcrcoc.org.
We are excited about the opportunity to shape the future of young scholars through this immersive technology training experience and look forward to working closely with the community, school district partners, and local businesses to foster relationships and an upskilled workforce together.
