We collaborated with the Poughkeepsie Farm Project to assist in preparation for planting for Earth Day 2022. Each year we celebrate Earth Day around the world, which helps us discuss needed attention on issues concerning the environment. The Youth One Stop Program participated with cleaning up the grounds of Krieger School by removing fallen wood and loose nails. We cleaned up the grounds so that we could plant trees at Krieger School Park. We had some of our clients within the program join us in this positive experience of helping others and working as a team. We discussed as a team where it would be best to have the garden display. Everyone voted that the garden should be at the school’s front entrance on the right side of the school building. As a group, it was successful gathering with processing our thoughts and adding necessary input.
The location for the garden will eventually be in front of the school by the right side of the building, and directly behind the school is where we specifically planted trees and removed wood. Students will have access to enter this beautiful garden once it is completed. This garden will also have a gate to protect the flowers and plants.
By celebrating Earth Day, students can also create changes in their everyday lives and their communities that will have a positive impact on the world around them. We also had a tour of the school location for other possible planting areas. It will be nice if we can go back in the future to possibly work on these other locations to expand on the planting areas. Another goal is to expand from Earth Day and preserving the environment to focus on teaching healthy eating habits and plant some fruits and vegetables in the garden. The kids would learn how to grow the fruits and veggies and take pride in eating the foods they helped to grow.
