Career Exploration and More at the CAC

The school year is in full swing at the Career Action Center, based out of Poughkeepsie High School. The Career Action Center has been serving City of Poughkeepsie youth since its inception in 2014. The drop-in center is open daily from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm and provides students with the necessary skills to identify and pursue their career interests and/or obtain employment. Now more than ever, it is critical for our youth to receive the support necessary to help them thrive.
 
This year, we have revamped our mentoring component to meet the needs of the school district. We are excited to announce that we will be collaborating with STEM teachers within the school. Our collaboration will allow us to provide them with access to guest speakers, technology equipment including a 3D printer, and Sphero robots. STEM careers are one of the fastest growing industries in the country. Guest speakers will provide an opportunity for the youth to explore careers, as well as learn what it takes to get to that specific career. 
 
Throughout the mentoring program, we will also be working with the youth in the classroom to help them meet their academic, employment, and career goals. Youth will be provided with an opportunity to complete an internship with a local business of their interest. Previous internship opportunities include KC Engineering, Dutchess 3D Imaging, The Children’s Medical Group-Poughkeepsie, and Orthopedic Associates of Dutchess County. Providing youth with opportunities to explore different career paths within high school not only saves them money, it also helps them alleviate some of the stress that young adults face once they complete high school. The more aware they are of their choices, the smoother the transition to post-secondary education will be.
