  • Meet Moms & Daughters of Girls Leadership Worldwide

Teaching Our Daughters to Become Leaders
    Thursday 1-4 pm August 4 at Val-Kill
Join the Women's Leadership Alliance in welcoming these inspirational daughters and moms from the Girls Leadership Worldwide program.
(Facilitator) Dr. Michele Winchester-Vega: Michele is the owner of Dr. Michele Winchester-Vega and Associates, the largest group private practice providing mental health services in Orange County. Dr. Michele Winchester-Vega was on the faculty full time at Yeshiva University from 1992-2000 at the Wurzweiler School of Social Work. Prior to this assignment she taught at SUNY New Paltz and Orange County Community College in the Social Sciences Division and worked within large social service agencies providing mental health treatment and social welfare programs. She currently is the volunteer Director of Development and board member of the Eleanor Roosevelt Center at Val-Kill, as well as a board member of the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan.
Dr. Michele and her daughter, Natasha (GLW Alum 2009), did a year long project with elementary school children to create and publish a book and a play called "Are You My Sister?" The project focused on collaboration not competition between girls and the importance of treating each other with respect. All monies earned benefited local charities.
Aminah Taariq (GLW Alum 2015, her mother will also be on the panel): I am a Hudson Valley resident, I am student body president (known as Clerk) at Oakwood Friends School, I am passionate about environmental justice and human rights, and I am actively involved in my local community.
Elle Ping (GLW Alum 2014, her mother will also be on the panel): I am a rising senior at Rhinebeck High School in Rhinebeck, NY. Currently I am planning a hygiene drive in my high school to donate items to students and their families in the Poughkeepsie School District. Often people forget about donating hygiene products because they aren't needed for survival, so the places that accept donations run out of them quickly. I hope to raise awareness about this issue and help everyone stay clean.

This event is a collaboration with the Eleanor Roosevelt Center at Val-Kill. The afternoon will include a tour of her treasured Val-Kill retreat, a screening of “Close to Home,” and a look at the permanent exhibit, “Eleanor Roosevelt and Val-Kill: Emergence of a Political Leader.”
