Best-selling author and prominent financial journalist, Jane Bryant Quinn, will discuss her new book, “How to Make Your Money Last: The Indispensable Retirement Guide,” at Starr Library, Saturday, January 23, at 2 p.m.
“What’s the biggest worry for people planning to retire or retired already? Quinn asks. “They’re afraid they might outlive their money.” Lifespans are getting longer, she says. “The question of how to stretch your income and savings over 30 years or more has never been so important.”
Publishers Weekly calls Quinn’s book “a hugely valuable resource for readers, wherever they are on their personal financial timeline.” Says Booklist: “The clarity of her prose is matched with her generosity of spirit.”
Quinn ranges over all the most critical retirement topics, including: How much income can you safely draw from your nest egg? What’s a worry-free way of investing for both security and growth? How much of your savings can you afford to spend to be sure of staying safe for the rest of your life? What’s the place of annuities and which kinds? What do the latest changes in Social Security mean to you?
She also addresses the emotional changes that retirement brings. “After decades of working, we’re finally free, but free to do what? We have to reinvent our lives.”
Quinn is the author of “Making the Most of Your Money NOW,” a complete guide to personal finance. This book has been in print – with regular updates – since 1991, and is in continual demand.
She wrote long-running columns for Newsweek and Women’s Day magazines, and a column syndicated to 250 newspapers by The Washington Post. An Emmy award-winner, she appeared on both the CBS-TV morning and evening news, and hosted her own show, Take Charge!, on the Public Broadcasting System. Her personal finance column currently appears in the AARP Monthly Bulletin
