The day couldn't have been more beautiful. Sunshine and blue skies welcomed members of the Women's Leadership Alliance at Val-Kill. First, we were treated to a tour of Eleanor Roosevelt's cozy, down-to-earth home by Park Ranger Ray. The walls were covered with black and white photographs of families and friends—including Amelia Earhart. The corner window spot was set for one of her afternoon teas; we envisioned the young Jack Kennedy asking for her endorsement to run for president.
A short film about her life described some of her truly amazing achievements. She traveled the world promoting civil rights and improving social and work conditions. She represented the U.S. as delegate to the United Nations. And, most importantly, she helped draft the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Learning about Eleanor was the perfect preparation to meet two graduates of the Girls Leadership Worldwide program. Elle Ping and Mimi Taariq described their 9-day intensive experience as transformational. The program uses Eleanor Roosevelt's life and legacy as a model and brings girls from diverse backgrounds all over the world together to build self confidence and learn the skills to help reach their personal girls. Dr. Michele Winchester-Vega, an ERVK board member and mother of a graduate of the Girls Leadership program, led a spirited and personal discussion with Elle, Mimi and their mothers on how we can help girls become leaders.
Thanks to Kathleen Durham, Executive Director of ERVK, for collaborating with the WLA on such an uplifting day!
