Concrete Ceiling: Challenges Women of Color Face in the Workplace

The Women's Leadership Alliance is hosting a panel discussion "Concrete Ceiling: Challenges Women of Color Face in the Workplace" on May 12 at 5:30 pm. Lisa Ghartey, Assistant Commissioner, Child Welfare and Community Services, New York State Office of Children and Family Services will moderate the panel discussion. Lisa attended Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Washington, D.C., earning a degree in International Politics. After Georgetown, Lisa returned to New York to attend law school at Pace University School of Law in White Plains, New York. During this time, Lisa spent a semester in London and attended the University College of London School of Law, where she had a wonderful opportunity to work with a Barrister and experience, the English Legal System first-hand.
Starting her legal career in New York was an easy decision, and she has spent the majority of her career working to improve the lives of the residents of New York State. For 12 years, Lisa served as Assistant Attorney General in the Litigation Bureau of the New York State Office of the Attorney General. In 2011, Lisa was appointed Assistant Commissioner, Child Welfare and Community Services of the New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), where she presently works. At OCFS, Lisa’s main focus is on developing statewide programs designed to improve the lives of New York’s most vulnerable children and families. Most notably, Lisa has led a New York State coalition comprised of OCFS, Family Courts, and the State Education Department to create strategies to improve K-12 and post-secondary educational outcomes for children in foster care and Juvenile Justice.
Additionally, Lisa is a member of the NYS Court Improvement Project, a federal program designed to build collaboration between child welfare and family courts in an effort to improve outcomes for the children and families we serve. Lisa represents OCFS as a member of the Governor’s Inter-Agency Task Force on Human Trafficking as well.Lisa lives in the City of Poughkeepsie with her husband, Michael and their two boys, Dayo and Femi.
